The Network for a New European Generation and the Centre for Spiritual and Cultural Advancement hosted an event at University College in London on the importance of interfaith dialogue and acceptance in Islam. The event opened with a recitation from the Quran of Sura Rum verses 22- 26, which highlight the diversity of humanity and the importance of compassion and mercy in governing our relations with each other:
And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge."
The event featured Paul Salahuddin Armstrong, Co-Director of The Association of British Muslims; Shaykh Babikir, the Imam of Yusuf Islam’s Islamia School and the Chairman of Ulfa Aid (an international Relief Agency); and Pearls of Islam, a female acoustic group who blend Caribbean, Middle Eastern and African musical influences.
The event's main theme was that openness to different faiths must begin with people of faith. They have to take the lead to provide a platform for interfaith understanding and respect. They need to provide the theological and scriptural justification for followers to respect other faiths.
